Quality and functionality that have certainly raised numerous eyebrows is the MOTOSURF A3100 phones by Motorola. This handset is only available on the Next G network of Telstar, and it has made a big hit among many users of touch-screen smartphones, featuring the TelstraOne Experience interface. The goal of the TelstraOne Experience is to provide users with simplicity and speed in performing various functions such as using Windows and other applications.
The Motorola MOTOSURF A3100 provides you with a very slick design that feels comfortable to hold, and the shape is similar to that of the iPhone, only it has more pronounced curved edges. The style is certainly trendy, and includes a brushed plastic and metal combination in the finish, a display surrounded in glossy black plastic, and shiny edging of silver that adds to the iPhone likeness.
It is similar to the BlackBerry because of the trackball on the phone, and it has a 2.8 touch-screen that is resistant to scratching, as well as a stylus that is included for input. There is many times however that neither the trackball nor the stylus will be needed. This is simply because of the responsiveness the screen holds. A drawback to the MOTOSURF A3100 is resolution that is low and angles that have poor viewing quality.
A great advantage offered with the use of this handset is the benefits in being able to use PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Microsoft ActiveSync, document viewers, and a PDF reader. This is because the MOTOSURF A3100 uses the operating system of Windows Mobile 6.1.
The home screen that is interactive and features the TelstaOne, gives you access to numerous applications, such as call history, quick shortcuts, email, Web browser, Telstra services, shortcut menu, and messaging. The power of speed and user friendliness that the TelstraOne Experience gives users has completely changed the way in which many individuals view touch-screen handsets, and with its use the Start menu is rarely needed.
Switching between pages is done at a fast response rate, and it is also smooth. Specific menus allow you ease in scrolling through lists, dragging N’ dropping icons, and flipping through applets. The services, applications, and applets that can be accessed are also customizable.
On the home screen, you can easily access messages, calls, emails, settings, and important appointments. The lower portion of the screen features a carousel icon that makes it convenient to access the weather, favorites, contacts, videos, Internet shortcuts, pictures, and of course Telstra’s My Place.
The larger on-screen keyboard that Motorola included on the MOTOSURF A3100 unfortunately did not help much with texting problems. Expecting accuracy as you type messages, is expecting too much with the ‘so-so’ quality of messaging without the stylus.
Even though this handset is multimedia capable, resolution that is poor completely takes away the desire to use it as a player for video. Surprisingly, even with the video problems, using the Telstra portal for streaming mobile Foxtel, actually works efficiently.
The photo quality is reasonable using a 3 mega-pixel camera with flash option. It includes the 3.5mm standard jack for headphones, VGA camera that is front-mounted and used for video calls, and it features the A2DP Bluetooth profile. This allows you the option of listening to varieties of music with headphones that are wireless. Browser navigation is responsive and fast, yet still falls short of the iPhone capabilities. The addition of Opera Mobile makes browsing through the Web more efficient. It also improves quality of images and Web pages are automatically displayed in full-screen. Using the Next G network improves speed a great deal. The MOTOSURF A3100 includes GPS, Wi-Fi, and it is a HSDPA 7.2Mbps handset.
