Like button of Facebook celebrates its 1st birthday
News — April 21, 2011 at 10:30 pm | Comment NowThe Like button of Facebook has now become ubiquitous on the Web and it is still getting installed on a lot of Websites these days. This Like button was introduced by Facebook at the F8 developers conference with Facebook Open Graph and instant personalization. Using the ‘Like’ button, Facebook spread their social footprint across Web. More than 50,000 Websites installed this button and the number rose to about 100,000 in less than one month.
The number has been constantly rising since then. Facebook announced on Thursday that more than ten thousand Websites add Like button everyday and it is identical to what Sheryl Sandberg, the COO said last year in October. This means that the Like button’s growth has not slowed down in the past six months. Facebook turns on email notifications accidentally
News — April 19, 2011 at 10:21 pm | Comment NowFacebook has started e-mail notifications for a few users and the users of the social networking site have started complaining about it. A lot of users get email notifications for events like when someone sends friend request or when friends post on the wall. You can turn off this feature in the user settings but it seems that something has gone wrong at Facebook and this feature has been activated.
Facebook said that some people have been receiving email notifications for the settings that were turned off and checkboxes are checked. Facebook said on its Known Issues Facebook Page that they are working for a solution to the problem. We hope they find one soon.

Apple sues Samsung Galaxy, other tablets to follow?
Gadgets, News — April 18, 2011 at 10:23 pm | Comment NowApple filed a patent suit on Friday saying that Samsung has infringed their patents. Apple is seeking punitive and actual damages for this. Samsung Galaxy Tab is a tablet PC running on Android OS and it was released last year. Apple is saying that the device is infringing on the iPad patents. The looks and feel are similar to the iPhone. This lawsuit doesn’t mention about damages that they are seeking but there aren’t any punches pulled either.
Apple says that instead of developing a proprietary technology and a unique style for their products, Samsung has chosen to copy the technology of Apple. They have also used the same innovative style and user interface in their devices.

Facebook might be moving to China

This piece of news has been floating around since 2007 and it is hard to ignore it since these are all reliable sources. But you won't be able to make friends with any one in China. The country has a very closed nature and people in China won't be able to make friends with anyone outside the country. Chinese Facebook would be limited only to the Chinese citizens.
It is believed that Facebook will be partnering along with Baidu, which is the biggest Chinese search engine and it has a value of about $50 billion. It is said that Facebook has already reached an agreement along with Baidu for creating a new Chinese social network. Baidu visited Facebook [...]
Apple power adapters to have rechargeable battery packs?
News — April 16, 2011 at 12:05 am | Comment NowOur sources say that Apple might be building their own external battery pack for the iOS gadgets. It is said that a patent has been filed by the company for this and it also shows how the rechargeable battery would be housed inside the power adapters. Through this, everything from iPods to MacBook Pros would get extra juice boost when the batteries are running on a low and when wall outlets aren’t available. There are plenty of battery packs available in the market right now but Apple says that they aren’t really the best solution for it.

Apple iPad hammering the sales of laptops and Netbooks
News — April 15, 2011 at 12:05 am | Comment NowAnalysts say that the increasing sales of Apple iPad 2 are seriously taking a toll on the sales of laptops and Netbooks in the market. Global sales of laptops have collapsed ever since the iPad 2 was launched. It is said that laptop manufacturers are planning to cut the laptop production because there is not much demand for it. Two big manufacturers which are affected are Acer and Asustek. Studies also say that the PC sales of HP are down by 12 percent and the consumer revenue of Dell is down by eight percent.
CNN says that Gartner cut their 2011 desktop unit growth forecast by five percent. It is said that about 30 percent of the owners of iPad are using the gadget as a replacement for laptop and it is said that the share of laptop market has fallen since the first iteration of the tablet was announced.

Google teaches computers how to see

The computers are now able to identify and recognize the Eiffel Tower, a Budweiser can or the Mona Lisa thanks to convoluted algorithms. In spite of the big technological strides, there are plenty of hurdles for visual search that needs to be cleared. For now, it would be easier to tell the things that image search engine can recognize instead of the things that it cannot. However, there is rapid progress being done and there are increasing numbers of brilliant minds taking up this challenge; it now seems that robo-eyesight intelligence is now within reach.

Digital comics come to life on tablets

These comics will be great to read on a colorful and larger display which is portable too. The fist app to let you read comics on iPad was Comixology which arrived with the release of the Apple tablet in 2010. It was an app that let you read, purchase and store comics on the iPad. This app wasn't new to the world of Apple, it was previously available for the iPhone but the full potential was realized only on the iPad. The reading experience was almost cinematic and there was something called 'guided view' that mimicked how your eye follows printed page. In the guided view, you could read panel by panel instead of the standard page by page. It is said that about 50 percent of users use the guided view.
