IBM Dives Deep Into Smart-Water Management

News — September 8, 2009 at 1:00 am | 12 Comments
In today’s modern world, billion and billions of dollars are spent on upgrading the electricity–grids; however the delivery of fresh water to our homes also requires an equal and much required upgrade. IBM has looked into the matter with their smart-water management plans.  They have put together a team of researchers to study how information and technology can sniff out a new improved manner of delivering fresh water. The main objective is to plot a technique to maximize the efficiency of the 1% of fresh water that is available on earth. Even in developed countries like the U.S. the pipelines carrying water are seriously outdated, some of them are even made of wood. This results in a loss of at least 25-40 percent of water, which is a huge margin, when nearly half the water goes down the drain during delivery itself. This means that most of the municipalities  [...]

According to Japanese research company BCN, the walkman has outsold the dominating iPod for the first time in four years. Sony tasted victory pure through the sales volume and number of music players. Sony recorded sales figures of 43 percent towards the end of August 30, beating apple by a whisker, who recorded 42.1 percent. The survey did not include the sales of the iPhone because of the obvious reasons of it serving as a cell-phone. Sony grabbed six of the top 10 sales spots with the different models of its Walkman. While, Apple took home the remaining three slots with its 16GB iPod Nano, iPod Classic, and iPod Shuffle. The 8GB iPod Nano also topped the sales charts with a 21.7 percent of the market share, while Sony's mini NW-E042 Walkman came in a distant second with just  [...]

@ 40, Internet Keeps Getting Stronger

News — September 4, 2009 at 1:00 am | 1 Comment
Today, we celebrate the birth of the internet, something that the entire world depends on, everything from news feeds, to entertainment, to e-mails, to business transactions, shopping etc. the Internet has become a house-hold name has turned 40 and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Lets rewind a bit, 40 years ago, on the second of September, 1969, two massive computers at the University of California exchanged some data, although meaningless, as part of the first test of Arpanet, an experimental network for the U.S. Department of Defense. A few weeks later, on October 29, a connection was established between two sites - the UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California. The very next year, that is 1970, Arpanet got the first East Coast node, at Bolt, Breakneck and Newman in Cambridge. By then, UC Santa Barbara and University of Utah had also  [...]

Toyota’s Tries Out The Drunk Driving Lock-Down Device

News — September 3, 2009 at 10:00 am | 2 Comments
Here is another attempt by a company to curb drunk-driving mishaps, first being the mighty Volvo when it comes to road safety. This hand-held contraption made by Toyota is more or less similar to Volvo’s, but here, it analyses your breath without you actually having to shove the damn thing down your gullet. Hmm...very clever and hygienic besides, you should have had a light-bulb glowing moment by now. If you’re drunk and the car doesn’t let you start up, you could probably get your co-driver to blow into the device and you could be on your way. Not a bad idea, but you see Toyota are one step ahead on this one, what they’ve done is, install a camera that records which face goes with which reading so a ‘smashed’ driver can't try to push a false reading from a volunteer's less-boozy breath. If the level is very high, the ignition is disabled until a lower reading  [...]
