Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition (1TB) – With protective rubber band
Consumer Electronics — on September 6, 2010 at 12:23 am | Comment NowIomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition comes with a rubber band on the body which is supposed to protect it from shocks. The drive also comes with software suite. This product will put you back by $220 and for a 1 TB drive, it give excellent cost per gigabyte ratio.
Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition (1TB) is 0.94 inch thick, 3.75 inches wide, and 5.88 inches long. It is a bit thicker than the previous product but the difference won’t be noticed easily. The manufacturer has sacrificed silver, red and blue finishes for muted black glaze which makes the drive look professional. The band on the unit is called “Drop Guard Xtreme Power Grip Band” which is way too exaggerated. It is just an X shaped band covering the exgterior.
This band will protect the Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition from up to seven feet. The predecessor had protection up to four feet. The band can be taken off if you think it is a nuisance but I won’t recommend it because the band can keep the drive smiling through thick and thin. I dropped the device from a height and was glad to see that the band held on to its promises. The interface of the unit is very clean. There are FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 ports on the front and I should than the manufacturer for giving the FireWire port. They are disappearing fast from hard drives.

On the top, there is a tiny screen which glows when you are transferring the data. There is another power port if you need it. but most of the drives have a USB powered bus. There is also an adapter bundled.
This drive is “Mac Edition” which means it is compatible with the Mac HFS+ format. You can connect this drive to your Mac and start the work without going through too much fuss. There are a few software titles bundled with the drive so make sure you check all of them.
I calculated the cost per gigabyte ratio of the Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition; it is 21 cents per gigabytes. Cost of the 1 TB drive is $220. This is better than the predecessor which cost 34 cents per gigabyte. However, if you want something more cheap take a look at Verbatim Acclaim but you won’t get the same functionality.
For speed tests, I connected the Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition to my laptop through USB 2.0. I got read speeds of 24.9 mpbs and write speeds of 30.8 mbps. For FireWire, the speeds were equally impressive at 9 mbps for both read and write. These speeds are better than competition but you won’t notice the difference unless you transfer a lot of files in sizes of ten GB or more.
Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition comes with a three year warranty for labor and parts. You can visit the manufacturer’s Website for quick trouble shooting. The Website is really good, you will find everything you want here. The company also says that the drive will be replaced if it has any manufacturing defects.
