Kyocera Neo E1100 (MetroPCS) – Lacks 3.5 mm headphone jack
Cell Phones — on September 1, 2010 at 12:43 am | Comment NowWhen I first saw that Kyocera Neo E1100, I thought it was a standard flip style phone but as I went through it, I realized that it had some out of the box features. The stylish elements on the phone are what keeps this handset apart from the crowd. They are complementary and subtle, just like other Kyocera phones and do not distract much. The feature set is pretty functional but that is not a bad thing. Tons of high end smartphones are coming in to the market but this doesn’t mean that low end ones are going to die. The Kyocera Neo E1100 is available without a contract for $49 from MetroPCS but you can also get it online for as low as $19.
Kyocera Neo E1100 has smooth lines and a very thin profile. The handset is 3.52 inches long, 0.66 inch thick and 1.06 inches long. This
is reminiscent of older phones that we had a couple of years ago. I won’t call the dated design boring though. On the front, there is a glossy light blue finish.
You can also use it as a mirror and I was glad to see that it doesn’t attract a lot of smudges and fingerprints. The gadget is quite light weight at 3.2 ounces.
On the body, there is a cool “light pipe” which glows blue when you get a phone call. I really liked it but you can also turn it off. This light pipe also surrounds the camera lens located on the top end of the phone. On the flip side, the vertical external display didn’t impress me much. I am not complaining about the monochrome display but the resolution could have been bigger. The screen is hidden, which means it is invisible when the backlighting is off. The text was difficult to see even in bright light as it was too small. You can choose between either battery meter and signal strength, or time and date. You cannot have both.
External buttons on the phone include a camera shutter and volume rocker. They are located on the left and the rocker is a bit thin for my tastes. You can still find it easily during the calls. On the right side, there is there is a micro USB port along with the 2.5 mm headphones jack. I didn’t the presence of latter; the manufacturer could have put in a standard 3.5 mm headphones jack for plugging in standard headphones. Kyocera Neo E1100 also has a reverse hinge; the front flap folds behind rear face when you open it. It doesn’t have any major impact on user experience.
The display of the Kyocera Neo E1100 is really small at 2.2 inches but I won’t complain about it in an entry level phone like this. You get a resolution of 240×320 pixels with support for 262,000 colors. There are a few options for customization and the menus are user-friendly. I also liked that the phone gives a few shortcut options in the standby mode.
