LG BD570 review – Excellent Blu-ray quality, lacks 3D playback
Consumer Electronics — on March 23, 2010 at 12:05 am | 9 CommentsThumbs Up:
Perfect picture quality; inbuilt Wi-Fi; online streaming services such as CinemaNow, Pandora, YouTube, Vudu, Netflix, Picasa, and Weather; plays photos, videos and music through USB drive or DLNA compatible networked computer.
Thumbs Down:
No inbuilt storage; over-designed media interface; no quick-start mode; missing support for 3D Blu-ray; need to change up to 1080p output mode.
The Whiz Kid Speaks:
LG BD570 is a table-top Blu-ray disc player that has up-scaling up to 1080p, 12bit/162MHz video D/A converter and 24bit/192kHz audio D/A converter. Its supported media types are BD-R, BD-RE, BD-ROM, CD, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW. The Blu-ray player is DLNA-compatible to stream the files via compatible networked computer.
Inbuilt decoder options are DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD, and DTS recorder. LG BD-570 supports audio formats of AC3, WMA, MP3, and AAC. In addition, the supported video formats are DivX HD, MPEG4, MPEG2, MPEG4, XviD, DivX, MKV, and AVI. The Blu-ray player has Ethernet jack and Wi-Fi that supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n.
The additional features are X.V. Colour Technology, JPEG photo-playback, Cinema mode, Deep color, 100dB signal-to-noise ratio, and surround sound. LG BD570 is ENERGY STAR qualified and consumes 20watt in operational state.
The connector set includes 1×USB (4 pin USB Type A) – Front, 1×Ethernet (RJ-45) – Rear, 1×HDMI output (19 pin HDMI Type A) – Rear, 1×Audio line-out (RCA phono x 2) – Rear, 1×Composite video output ( RCA phono ) – Rear, 1×Component video output (RCA phono×3) – Rear, 1×SPDIF output (RCA phono) – Rear, and 1×SPDIF output (TOSLINK) – Rear.
LG is providing 90 days limited labor warranty and one year limited parts warranty on the BD570 Blu-ray player.
Razzle Dazzle:
LG BD570 is 16.9 inches wide, 1.7 inches tall, and 8 inches deep and weighs 4.4 lbs. Its slim-line profile is very attractive. The black glossy finished front panel flips down to open disc tray, USB port, and other buttons. If you want to keep USB drive connected, then front panel remains flipped down, which makes player to appear less slick.
Inside Dope:
LG BD390 was the first “must buy” Blu-ray disc player with 7.1 analog audio ports; inbuilt storage; good range of streaming services; and inbuilt Wi-Fi. Now, the company has launched its new product – $250 priced LG BD570, which is less as compared $400 for the BD390. The BD570 does not have 7.1 analog audio outputs and not compatible to 3D Blu-ray. On the contrary, the BD750 features excellent picture quality, inbuilt Wi-Fi, and online streaming services such as Picasa, Pandora, YouTube, Vudu, and Netflix. Currently, every company is providing Blu-ray player with Netfllix and inbuilt Wi-Fi at this price. As a result, the LG BD570 will face a tough competition in the market. Overall, LG BD570 is an excellent Blu-ray disc player; still it is not as great as BD390.

LG has redesigned the remote control of the BD570. It has black glossy main surface that works as magnet to capture fingerprints and smudges very quickly. The remote control of LG BD570 has straightforward controls. We like that playback buttons sits on an upside hill-type curve on the remote and you can use them by feel. The directional pad has six buttons on its surroundings.
LG BD570 has revamped user interface that displays individual ice cube squares for Setup, Netcast, Home Link, Music, Photo and Movie. This arrangement feels cool and attractive to use, but remains slow for navigation. Netcast category shows a set of online media streaming options in large squares. The included streaming services are Netflix, Vudu, Cinema Now, YouTube, Pandora, Picasa, and Weather. The YouTube layout of the BD570 was the best we have ever seen on a Blu-ray player. The BD570 does not include Amazon VOD (Video On Demand), whereas it has added Vudu for compensation that offers pay-per-movie. If you are a big fan of Vudu high-def movies, then LG BD590 will be the best option due to its inbuilt 250GB hard drive. Noteworthy: other competitors are offering Amazon VOD in the same price range of the BD570.
The LG BD570 features inbuilt Wi-Fi like its competitors including Insignia NS-WBRDVD, Toshiba BDX2700, Samsung BD-C6500, and Sony BDP-S570. On the contrary, the Panasonic DMP-BD85 needs additional USB adapter for Wi-Fi.
As already discussed, the LG BD570 does not support 3D Blu-ray playback feature. This is not a great omission because everybody does not have a 3D-enabled HDTV to notice the change. It is important to mention there that Sony has already promised a firmware upgrade to support 3D playback for its BPD-S570, BDP-S470 and PS3 in this summer. We hope that LG will also make announcement regarding the same 3D support.
LG BD570 can stream photo, audio, and video files from DLNA compatible networked computer. You can also playback the above files from USB drive. We did not get any problem while playing back DivX HD and MKV files from USB drive, but MKV files did not stream over network. LG is providing Nero MediaHome 4 Essential that works well. The BD570 offers onboard decoding for DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD Master Audio, Bit Stream Output, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby True HD. However, it does not support SACD/DVD Audio and you have to opt for Sony BDPS570 and Oppo’s Blu-ray player for the same.
The standard AV output options of LG BD570 supports coaxial/optical audio, stereo analog audio, HDMI 1.3, component and composite video outputs. Unlike LG BD390, the BD570 does not support multi-channel (7) analog audio outputs. The connectivity options are limited to one Ethernet port and one USB port. The BD570 does not have RS-232 port and SD card slot. For additional USB ports, you can go for Oppo BDP-80 and Sony BDP-S570.
LG BD570 Blu-ray player provided good image quality while testing, but it was not better than high-end quality of Oppo BDP-83. The BD570 delivered acceptable video and film resolutions with passable dynamic range. Text was displayed not as good on the BD570 as looked on the BDP-570.
During our test, the LG BD570 performed better than LG BD590, Vizio VBR200W and PS3 Slim. On the contrary, its performance could not beat that of Sony BDP-S570 and Oppo BDP-83.
Unlike latest Blu-ray players, LG BD570 does not have quick-start option and consumes little power in standby mode. If you need the quick-start feature in your Blu-ray player, then you can go for $7.35 more priced Sony BDP-S570.
Nitty Gritty:
If you need an affordable Blu-ray disc player and can work without onboard storage and quick start mode, then you can buy LG BD5700. However, if you need onboard storage then you can go for LG BD590 and think about Sony BDP-S570 for 3D playback.

Such a big article on this one device. I reckon this won’t interest anyone. It should be small and point to point.
Blu-ray is going to be all over the market very soon!! It has got the best quality of picture ever!
Blu rey discs are really costly and you get in very limited places. I feel it is not worth to buy for now.
In built WI-FI , live streaming! wow it has got complete video experience!
Blu rey is very new to this electronic world and many of them don’t have any idea about it. It should have good marketing strategy for making it available everywhere.
Blu Rey is the next generation video player. It will have all the features and one will not need anything except 1 blu rey player at home.
Storage is the biggest thing what you need in Blu Rey and it is missing in this player.
I don’t know much technicality of this stuff but it seems to be costly as per the product. People can get much better stuffs in the same price.
I am hooked on the BD570 and I truly believe that it offers so much bang for your buck! Think about the earlier versions like the BD370 and 590. I think the 570 rocks. I am a gadget geek and this one is a keeper for at least a few years. It’s trim, good looking, and delivers streaming content on the fly.
