Nikon Coolpix S4000 Review – Bad performance

When it comes to touch screen cameras, there are complaints sometimes about the display responsiveness but I was glad to see that the Nikon Coolpix S4000 doesn’t have any. The touch controls are quite responsive both through the stylus and fingertips. I really liked the way Nikon made the screen useful; the buttons are not just put up there as physical key’s substitutes. I had two problems with this camera – first is the autofocus system which was inconsistent and the general shooting speeds too were unimpressive.

The photo quality of the Nikon Coolpix S4000 in dim lighting or indoors is not that great. But you won’t complaint much if you just want to upload the photos to the Web or take small prints. I would recommend this camcorder if you are looking for an inexpensive touch screen camera for taking portraits that are well lit. Such types of photographers are really rare though and there are plenty of other options to choose from. The options come at a relatively lower price and hence this camera might find it tough to compete in the market.

I liked the design of the Nikon Coolpix S4000, especially for this price. The exteriors are made up of ultra compact metal which gives it an expensive look. You have five color options – plum, pink, red, black and silver. On the front, there is a wide angle lens along with 4x zoom. On the back, you have the touch screen display. The resolution of this screen is higher than what I originally expected. The body is slim but the camera is still comfortable to hold and you also have the wrist strap.

You will have to use the touch screen for most of the functions but there are some physical controls too. On the top, you have the power button along with shutter release and zoom ring. On the screen’s lower right side, you have the play button and shooting mode button for editing and reviewing photos, but that is all you get. Again, I must reiterate that the screen is really responsive. The shooting options and menu opened up quickly without any lag.

When you shoot at full 12 megapixel resolution of the camera, the entire display is used for screening the shots and the icon are just layered on the top. On the screen’s left, you have icons for changing the timer, flash, display and macro functions. On the lower right side, there are icons for the touch based shooting options and also buttons for getting access to the setup and shooting settings of the camera. The touch settings on the Nikon Coolpix S4000 include Touch Shutter for focussing on the subject and to shoot with just one tap; Subject Tracking which automatically tracks moving subjects; and also a Touch AF/AE, which automatically focuses and adjust the exposure of whatever you select. You don’t get all three of these in the shooting modes. The options remain unavailable. In the playback mode, you can use the touch screen to browse through the photos, videos and to add/draw decorations to the pictures.
