Nokia Surge 6790 – Made for the youth

There are plenty of experiments done in terms of phone design at the moment but not all of them go well in the market. I think the Nokia Surge 6790 will be one such phone. Nokia has tried a bit too hard this time and there is nothing to like about this design. Looking at the phone, you will instantly get the idea that it is made for the younger generation.

Some might think that the Nokia Surge 6790 is a business phone but it is targeted more at younger audience or for social networking enthusiasts. It has everything that you need in a smartphone but the design will be a turn off for corporate users. Business users should take a look at the company’s E or N series phones. The handset has a slider interface and pushing the top half to the right reveals the full QWERTY keyboard.

Nokia Surge 6790 has a compact design but the body is made up of plastic, which feels pretty cheap. It also attracts a lot of fingerprints. The phone screen is also small; movies and videos won’t look good on this display. Hence, I won’t recommend this phone even to multimedia enthusiasts. Close to the display, there are three buttons which are stiff and hard to press.

Buttons on the navigation array too are a bit hard to press. This array consists of standard Send, End buttons, two soft keys and a four way direction button with the OK key in center. The only good feature on this handset is the full QWERTY keyboard. The keys are placed at a distance of each other and hence I didn’t have many mishits. I typed a lot of messages on the keyboard and didn’t have any fatigue issues for my fingers at all. The keys also give a good tactile feedback so you know that your presses are registered.

The Nokia Surge 6790 comes with a full HTML Web browser with support for Flash Lite. This lets you view videos from sites like YouTube. I tried this feature in my labs, it wasn’t all smooth. I had to try a couple of times before it started working right. Other features on the phone include MobiTV, Mobile Banking app, AT&T Music, and AT&T Navigator. The latter lets you use the phone like a GPS device to get turn by turn directions.

The Nokia Surge 6790 is a smartphone made for social networking enthusiasts. It is running on Symbian’s operating system. It includes features for work and personal e-mail, productivity tools, 3G support, Bluetooth, etc. There are a plenty of features here that would make business users drool but I won’t recommend this handset to them because of the design. Instead, I would recommend you to go for the Nokia E71x, which costs a bit more but gives excellent value for money. On the other hand, this phone is great for youngsters looking for something more than a basic phone. They will certainly like the social networking offerings on the phone.
