Review of ASUS F50Sv A2 16-inch Laptop
Laptops — on June 3, 2009 at 10:56 am | 2 CommentsWhat Is Your Opinion On The ASUS F50Sv A2 16-inch Laptop?
The ASUS F50Sv A2 is definitely a pretty good laptop to use for gaming excitement and fun, and the 16-inch screen size is definitely a big plus while doing so, but the overall style is certainly not one that stands out in the crowd as being one to have a large amount of appeal, and the battery life isn’t all that great either. About the only good thing there is to say about the appearance of this laptop is the fact that it does not collect fingerprints nearly as easily as some of the other laptops do.

If you are hoping for fantastic sound quality, you will want to look elsewhere. This laptop is, however, built of a high quality construction, includes the popular Blu-ray drive, and the Nvidia graphics processor.

Many of the 16-inch laptops are growing in popularity because of the benefits that many of them provide, and they are quite a bit lighter in weight than some of the larger models. The ASUS F50Sv A2 is lighter in weight than some of the others, but it still leans a little towards the heavy side. At $1,149, the eye grabber of this laptop would certainly be the Nvidia GeForce G 120M graphics chip and the Blue-ray drive that it’s equipped with.
There seems to be good control with the multi-touch pad that is inset. However, the button bar located just beneath it that rests on a rocker makes it harder to click left or right than what you would expect. The styles where the left and right mouse buttons are separate just seem to work much easier. The keyboard offers plenty of room. It does include a number pad but media control buttons would have been much more beneficial. Unfortunately, that is one thing the ASUS F50Sv A2 does not feature.

ExpressGate is a nice instant-launch browser that is added, but the functionality is not consistent. The instant access the chrome bar above the function keys gives you, to ExpressGate and other programs that can be launched including various applications, and Windows Media Center did not really save that much time, all in all.
The ASUS F50Sv A2 features a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor, 4GB, 800 MHz DDR2 memory, 320 7200rpm hard drive, and Mobile Intel GM45 Express chipset.
The Blue-ray drive is a WinDVD and many have considered purchasing this particular notebook just because of the Blu-ray. The setup for this feature, however, was not all that easy of a task to accomplish. The sound quality is not that great, and it certainly takes completely away from the experience you would expect from Blu-ray. The 16-inch screen has a resolution of 1366×76 and works just fine for almost any video or gaming activities, but not having the 1080p was a disappointment however. Generally, you would expect a much higher performance level from the drive and GT 120M processor. The laptop along with the adapter weighs 7.36lbs, it is 14.96” wide by 10.43” deep, and its height is 1.64”.

The ASUS F50Sv A2 uses VGA-out, HDMI for video, it has a BD-ROM/DVD burner, has networking capabilities of Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and it also includes Bluetooth 2.1. For those who want the convenience of plugging headphones in, there are both headphone and mic jacks included. Although it comes with stereo speakers, you will find the quality a disappointing factor. It certainly is not USB port poor, but it would have been nice to trade one of the 4 ports for a eSATA port.
This laptop is definitely a powerful system that uses Windows Vista Premium as an operating system. In the benchmark tests Unreal Tournament 3 was running at 60.6 fps, and was quite good in comparison to a lot of other 16-inch mainstreamers, such as the HP Pavilion dv7-1285dx (43.2), and the Dell Studio XPS 16 (57.8). You will also find that the Nvidia GeForce G 120M GPU video card is an enjoyed addition that adds punch to the power.
You might find the battery life to be a disappointing factor, as it only ran one hour and thirty-one minutes during the battery drain test. You expect flexibility when you spend a large amount of money in purchasing a laptop, then when you end up having to leave it plugged in and sitting on top of your desk, it is a let-down that totally defeats your purpose to begin with.
The ASUS F50Sv A2 comes with a warranty that will cover accidental damage for up to one full year, and this includes such accidents as spills, drops, power surges, and fires. It also includes a warranty for up to two years that will cover the parts and labor. The ASUS Support website has made an improvement in user friendliness, so you will easily be able to find manuals, FAQs, and driver downloads in case you may find the need.
