Samsung Omnia – Can be sluggish occasionally

Samsung Omnia is a high end smartphone and phone is really costly especially if you purchase it unlocked. Verizon Wireless is also covering this phone and you can check it out, if you are on a stiff budget. The best part about the phone is the big 3.2 inch screen which is excellent for watching movies. You get a resolution of 240×400 pixels which is quite good too. The screen is not as good as some of the highest end phones I have seen like BlackBerry Storm or HTC Touch Diamond but it is still very good.

Samsung Omnia comes with plenty of multimedia features. There is Windows Media Player 10 and the manufacturer also gives something called Touch Player which features a good user interface. The functionality is quite similat to the Cover Flow of iPhone. You can play a wide variety of media formats like MP3, AAC, WMA, eAAC+, 3GPP, MP4, Xvid, H.264, and DivX. There are other goodies like FM radio but you have to plug in the included headset as it includes the antenna. Verizon Wireless’s version is offered in only an eight GB model but the costlier unlocked model is available in 16 GB and 8 GB capacities. I am not complaining here, eight GB is still a lot and you can store plenty of content here. You can even carry your entire music library in the pocket.

Samsung Omnia has a five megapixel camera and there are plenty of advanced features. Apart form the digital zoom and video recording functions, you get auto focus, flash, panorama mode, face detection, antishake, SmileShot (which detects if the subject is smiling and automatically clicks the picture), etc. For the pictures, there are six options for the sizes and three settings for quality. There are also 15 shooting modes to choose from. They include sports, sunset, fireworks, etc. You can play around with the white balance settings, ISO settings, effects, etc. Finally, the phone comes with GPS radio and it lets you geotag your pics. The video mode doesn’t give you as many tools but you still get some big ones like three choices for quality and size.

My one big complaint here is that you cannot increase the number of widgets on the phone. You are stuck with what Samsung gives you. This problem exists with both the Verizon and unlocked version. I wish that the manufacturer at least gave me a few more widgets. There 16 widgets built-in, in to the phone and they include messages, contacts, wireless manager, calendar, multimedia and games. The layout is far from clean and if you don’t like the TouchWiz interface, you can turn it off in the settings and get the standard Windows Today screen.

Verizon Wireless’s version of the phone includes AC adapter, USB cable, stylus, 2.5mm headset adapter, 3.5mm/FM radio antenna, reference material, and software discs. There is no limit to the phone memory for address book and you can put as much as you want. A single entry can hold multiple numbers, birthdays, notes and addresses.
