Even though the VGA dongle and hidden ports may be a little harder to access on this mini, and the cost is a little higher than others, the Asus Eee PC 1008HA has made a hit with its slim and sleek design, as well as the clever manner in which the connections and ports are hidden.
With competition that seems to get stiffer all the time, it is no surprise that Asus has also held their spot in the game by releasing this iconic mini laptop with a complete new change in design that has been incorporated in the Eee PC 1008HA, or more commonly called the Seashell. The extreme change of its looks along with its tapered and slim design have resulted with many people believing it to be one of the nicest looking Netbooks found on the market today.
The specific engineering that has been done allows for the convenient compactness of only being 1” thick, and it is certainly a popular part of this mini, but the price of $429 far exceeds that of some of the others that are being offered at prices that seem to be continuously lowering. Other features that have allowed for its tiny size are in the design of the LED display, a mini-VGA port that requires a smaller dongle, and it can be found hidden perfectly along the bottom. The angle of the Ethernet jack, and the pin-size plug power adapter has also contributed to its small size. One huge benefit is the traditional 160GB HDD is featured, instead of using a smaller size drive.

Over the white color mini, the black choice seems to be one that magnetizes fingerprints rather easily. It is extremely lightweight, and weighing approximately 2.8lbs, and it has dimensions of 10.3 x 7.1”.
The keyboard is comparable to the Eee PC 1000HE, and it tops many of the other designs that can be found on other selections in minis, and it also features the shift key in full size. This is a factor that may not seem like a big deal until it is a feature that you do not have, then you will certainly notice the difference. The raised dots of the touch pad work great, although the settings may need to be tweaked with the pointer for more optimal speed. When using the external USB mouse, you will find the two different access buttons that can be used to turn off the Wi-Fi to be very handy, and they are located just on top of the keyboard.

Being standard for a Netbook, the Eee PC 1008HA includes the native resolution of 1,024×600 on the 10.1” LED screen. The option of the backlit LED requires less power to be used than regular LCD screens, and provides for a much thinner lid.
The Eee PC 1008HA includes a mic, headphone jack and stereo speakers for audio functions, and the graphic features includes an integrated Mobile Intel GMA 950
Plastic hinged doors hide the ports and connections on the 1008HA, and to plug the items in that you wish to use, you will simply need to raise the door and the plugs will be exposed. It does lack having the ExpressCard slot, however. Other features found on the Eee PC 1008HA are a 1GB, 533 MHz DDR2 Memory, for Data-2USB 2.0 ports and SD card reader, networking capabilities using Ethernet, 02.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. It also has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor, and it uses the operating system of Windows XP.
It does include the Intel N280 Atom CPU, but it did not make it much faster than the Netbooks that include the N270 ubiquitous Atom. You will be pleased with the level of performance, as we have found that several others simply cannot stand up to the Eee PC 1008HA. As long as you do not have high expectations, tasks you need to perform such as surfing the Internet, word processing, and browsing or checking email can be performed quickly and efficiently.
Some users may not like the fact that the battery is non-removable, just like with the MacBook Air, but this of course all depends on the preference of each individual user. The battery usage may not be able to stand up to the 6 hours that are provided with larger six-cell batteries, but the 4-hour usage of the battery included with the Eee PC 1008HA is still quite impressive, and it passed the playback video battery drain test with flying colors. To help save on battery life, there is a series of power-presets in the Super Hybrid Engine featured on this Asus. Sure users can achieve these same settings manually, but having them set up in one place is definitely a more convenient option.
The support Web site available to you, for questions and any type of information is user friendly and has been improved tremendously over time. You will find FAQs that can be quite helpful and various driver downloads as well. The Eee PC 1008HA is covered with a convenient one-year parts and labor standard warranty. Pixels in the display that may become either stuck or dead are also covered under an extra 30-day warranty that can come in extremely handy, and it will give you time to find any glitches.
