Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 – For the budget users
Laptops — on August 20, 2010 at 12:05 am | Comment NowThis is an excellent example of a perfectly average laptop. It is powered by solid dual-core AMD Turion II processor, four gigs of RAM, 14 inch LCD and 320 GB hard drive. The hardware is strictly made for budget users and the chassis is really awful. But when it tested this laptop in my labs, I found that it was much faster than what I initially expected. But the battery life is really small and hence this notebook is not recommended for frequent travelers. This belongs to the upper class of budget laptops. Priced at $599, I would say that there are less expensive notebooks in the market like Asus K50IJ-BBZ5 which is faster too. I won’t recommend this laptop if you are looking for excellent value for money. There are cheaper ones available in the market.
Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 doesn’t have an HDMI port and the built in speakers sound quite awful. On the bright side, the performance of the processor will live up to your expectations. I have tested quite a lot of Toshiba laptops in my labs now and I have observed that budget ones have a sturdy chassis as compared to other manufacturers. This laptop feels really solid. It is one and half inches thick which is a bit thicker than what I expect from a 14 inch laptop. The surface has a dark silvery gray patterned finish. The looks are quite generic but it is still better than the laptops having a monochrome glossy finish. The bezel surrounding the screen is glossy black, just like the flat and wide keyboard. This laptop is not as bulky as it looks, the weight is just 4.7 pounds.

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 has a flat keyboard and I was disappointed not that there were no raised keys that are there in many other Toshiba laptops. In fact, all the Satellites that I got last year had this keyboard design. Typing on the keyboard was not comfortable, the squishy keys didn’t let me type well. There is extra elevation which helps matter a bit.
The multitouch matte touch pad is flush with the keyboard deck and you might lose it while typing. It works really well though. They have a convex shape, I don’t know why, but using them was quite comfortable.
Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 has a 14 inch screen with resolution of 1,366×768 pixels. It is the same as what you get on most 11 to 15 inch notebooks these days. The LED backlighting too is fairly bright. Video quality was really good and I had no problems while reading documents either. The stereo speakers located above the keyboard are really awful though. The volume refused to get loud enough and I would recommend investing in a separate speaker set if you want to watch movies on this laptop.
Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 has basic connection options. You get eSATA/USB port combo and this is the only spectacular feature about it. There is no HDMI, Bluetooth, or ExpressCard. I was disappointed to see that the expansion options were limited on the notebook even though there was enough room for these features.
