Toyota’s Tries Out The Drunk Driving Lock-Down Device

Here is another attempt by a company to curb drunk-driving mishaps, first being the mighty Volvo when it comes to road safety.

This hand-held contraption made by Toyota is more or less similar to Volvo’s, but here, it analyses your breath without you actually having to shove the damn thing down your gullet. Hmm…very clever and hygienic besides, you should have had a light-bulb glowing moment by now.

If you’re drunk and the car doesn’t let you start up, you could probably get your co-driver to blow into the device and you could be on your way. Not a bad idea, but you see Toyota are one step ahead on this one, what they’ve done is, install a camera that records which face goes with which reading so a ‘smashed’ driver can’t try to push a false reading from a volunteer’s less-boozy breath. If the level is very high, the ignition is disabled until a lower reading is achieved. That means you won’t find Courtney Love or David Hasselhoff driving around your neighbourhood at full throttle, provided they get into the car in the first place.

I know that this isn’t a fool-proof technique, but Courtney and Hasselhoff are that dumb anyway. Sample this, if you make use of mouth-wash then there is a chance that you might fail the breath-analyzer test and your car won’t start-up, thus making you late for work and ruining your entire day. Maybe you could first start your car up and then use the mouth-wash or maybe get yourself a Honda or something.

Once the false positives are taken care of, I think there is a huge possibility that all governments across the world will rush to standardize this device.

It doesn’t have to be fool proof & perfect system as long as it is positive step in right derection. I am sure it’s a admirable effort from Toyota, which would make our roads lot more safer, for sure.

Standardization would be more advantageous than just Toyota doing it for our society. I guess, it would happen, eventually.
